Private skin clinic

How our private skin clinic can help

A dermatologist assesses skin symptoms, rashes, lesions and visible changes to help identify the likely cause. At London Bridge Healthcare, that assessment is consultant-delivered.

During an initial consultation, Dr S Tharakaram will ask about your symptoms, medical history and any previous treatment, then examine the affected areas. The consultation is used to assess your concern and determine whether any investigation or treatment may be appropriate. Some people need explanation and a management plan only. Others may be offered investigation, a biopsy or a procedure. Further appointments or referral may be recommended.

Mole checks and skin-lesion assessment in London

A private mole check is a consultant examination of a mole, lump or other skin lesion. Removal is not automatically required. The method, if any, depends on the diagnosis and the site of the lesion.

People book because a mole has changed, a new mark has appeared, a lump is catching on clothing, or they want a lesion assessed for peace of mind. The dermatologist examines the area of concern and, where useful, looks at nearby skin. Close examination, which may include dermoscopy, can be used where it helps the assessment.

If removal is recommended, tissue may be sent for laboratory analysis where clinically indicated. Procedure fees are separate from the consultation fee. Some lesions are left and monitored; some need a later appointment; some may need referral.

Medical dermatology

Acne, eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis

Consider seeing a dermatologist if acne is persistent, painful, scarring, causing pigmentation, affecting your confidence, or has not settled with treatment you have already used. People also book because of itch, dryness, repeated flares, thickened patches, or a rash that is disrupting sleep or work.

Acne assessment

Acne varies from blackheads and inflamed spots to deeper cystic lesions. Recommendations depend on your medical history, the pattern and severity of the acne, and what has been tried before.

Eczema and dermatitis

These names cover several patterns of inflamed, itchy skin. A management plan may include skincare advice and treatment tailored to you. Chronic eczema is often controlled rather than permanently cured.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a long-term condition in which skin cells build up more quickly than usual. Treatment is individualised, with the aim of reducing flares, managing symptoms and improving comfort.

Changing lesion assessment

A new or changing lesion should be professionally assessed. After examination, the consultant may reassure you, recommend monitoring, advise a biopsy or removal, or refer you if further specialist care is needed.

Patient guidance

When to consider a consultation

Consider a dermatologist if you have a new or changing mole, a persistent rash, acne that is not settling, eczema, psoriasis, a lump, or another skin concern you want a consultant to assess. This is not a substitute for urgent NHS care.

Any recommended investigations or treatment will depend on the findings of your consultation.

This page provides general information and cannot diagnose a skin condition. If you are concerned about a new or changing skin problem, arrange an appropriate medical assessment.

  • If you are unsure which appointment is suitable, contact the clinic team before booking.
This is not an emergency or diagnostic service.

If you have rapidly spreading redness, significant swelling, fever, heavy bleeding, or another urgent concern, contact NHS 111, your GP, or call 999 in an emergency. Do not wait for a private clinic appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Private Dermatology FAQs

When should I see a dermatologist?

Consider seeing a dermatologist if you have a new or changing mole, a persistent rash, acne that is not settling, eczema, psoriasis, a lump, or another skin concern you would like a consultant to assess. This is not a substitute for urgent NHS care.

Do I need a GP referral to see a private dermatologist?

A GP referral is not required for private self-referral at London Bridge Healthcare. You can book directly, request a callback or call 020 7042 5807. Bring any useful GP letters or previous results if you have them.

How much is a private dermatologist consultation?

The initial consultation with Dr S Tharakaram is £200, payable when the appointment is confirmed. Follow-up appointments are listed at £150. Please confirm current fees when booking.

Can a dermatologist check a mole?

Yes. A consultant dermatologist can examine a mole or other skin lesion in clinic. Examination does not automatically mean that the lesion will need to be removed.

Can skin lesions be removed at the first appointment?

Not always. Removal depends on the diagnosis, location of the lesion, clinical suitability and appointment time. Some patients may require a separate procedure appointment, pathology or further referral.

What happens during a mole check?

You will be asked about the lesion and your skin history. The consultant will examine the area of concern and may use dermoscopy. You will then be advised whether monitoring, removal, laboratory analysis or another step is appropriate.

Does the clinic assess acne?

Yes. Acne can be assessed, including concerns about active breakouts, discomfort, pigmentation and scarring. Treatment recommendations are individualised and may require more than one appointment.

Will I need more than one dermatology appointment?

Sometimes. The first appointment is usually focused on assessment and advice. Procedures, pathology results, long-term skin conditions or ongoing treatment plans may require further appointments.

Are procedure costs included in the consultation fee?

No. The £200 fee is for the initial consultation. Procedures, tests, pathology and follow-up appointments are charged separately. The clinic will confirm any additional costs before a procedure is booked.

Where is the private skin clinic?

London Bridge Healthcare is located at 1A Newcomen Street, London SE1 1YR, near London Bridge station in Borough, Southwark.

What should I bring to my dermatology appointment?

Bring a list of your current medicines, any previous dermatology or GP letters, and details of creams or treatments you have already tried. Where practical, wear clothing that makes the affected area easy for the consultant to examine.
